FIRST WEEK (40 Clock hours)

MONDAY A.M. (CLASS-ROOM)
REGISTRATION AND ORIENTATION
Issuing of text books, study materials, tools and supplies. Acquaint students with instructor and other students. Course objectives, course outline and reading assignments. Pay balance of tuition.
HISTORY OF FLORISTRY.QUALIFICATIONS OF A RETAIL FLORIST. IDENTIFICATION OF FRESH CUT FLOWERS AND CUT FOLIAGES
Their identification and categorizing--- Line, Mass Form and Filler
CARE AND CONDITIONING OF FRESH CUT FLOWERS AND FOLIAGES
Latest techniques in conditioning, postharvest physiology, Chain of Life Concept, distribution from grower to the retail flower shop.
CONTAINERS, MECHANICAL AIDS, TOOLS AND ACCESSORIES

MONDAY P.M. (WORKTABLE)
PREPARATION OF ALL CONTAINERS WITH FOAM MATERIAL
All containers to be used the first week (approx. 20) are located beneath the students individual work table. All are filled with the proper mechanical aid and floral foam.
LEARN TO MAKE BOWS AND RIBBON ROSES, WRAP POTTED PLANTS

TUESDAY A.M. (WORK TABLE)
UNPACK AND CONDITION VERY LARGE SHIPMENT OF FLOWERS
Students put to practice the latest techniques learned about flower care and conditioning.
(CLASS-ROOM) PRINCIPLES, ELEMENTS AND RULES OF FLORAL DESIGN
These are the foundation upon which floral design is based.
PRINCIPLES: Design. Unity, Harmony, Balance, Proportion, Scale,Focal
Point, Rhythm and Repetition. ELEMENTS: Line, Form, Space,
Texture, Depth, Fragrance and Color. We use the latest textbook
available, "THE ART OF FLORAL DESIGN" by Norah T. Hunter.
BASIC SHAPES OF FLORAL ARRANGEMENTS and their influencing factors.

TUESDAY P.M. (WORK TABLE)
DESIGN ARRANGEMENTS OF FRESH FLOWERS
Various shapes--- Symmetrical and Asymmetrical Triangles, Vertical, Horizontal, Round, Topiary, Pyramidal, Crescent shaped Free-form and Hand-tied bouquets, The designs are to be taken home by the students for their enjoyment. Containers to be returned.

WEDNESDAY A.M. (CLASS-ROOM)
HOW TO MAKE A PROFIT IN THE FLOWER BUSINESS
How to make a profit. An easy way to figure pricing. How to buy from the local and foreign market. Tracking a customer order from the sales person to designer workroom, to billing department. How the WIRE ORG. (like F.T.D.) operate. How to handle Holidays. and Wedding.

SYMPATHY FLOWERS. THE IMPORTANCE OF FUNERAL WORK
Various ways to design funeral sprays.. flat sprays and easel sprays.-with Styrofoam spray bars, with Aqua picks and with floral foam.

FRIDAY A.M. (CLASS-ROOM & WORK TABLE)
PRICING FUNERAL DESIGNS AND HOW TO HANDLE DELIVERIES
Pricing.. sprays, floral tributes, casket sprays. etc. Options your customer has if the funeral has taken place. Maintaining good working relationship with Funeral Directors. How to handle ALL deliveries (1 hr.)
(WORK TABLE) DESIGNING FUNERAL BASKETS, PREPARATION WORK FOR HEART AND CROSS DESIGNS AND SATIN WRAPPED WREATH
Preparing heart and cross with ribbon pleating. or foliage, or moss, or bamboo, etc. Preparing wreath with satin wrapping.

COMPLETING THE DESIGN PORTION OF THE HEART, WREATH & CROSS

SECOND WEEK (40-clock hours)

M0NDAY A .M. (CLASS-ROOM WORK TABLE)
REVIEW OF PRINCIPLES, ELEMENTS AND RULES OF DESIGN (I hr.)
(WORK TABLE) FLOWERS TO WARE. CORSAGES,WRISTLETS,
HEADPIECES
Learning the proper techniques for wiring and taping corsage flowers.
Corsages and headpieces designed in the A.M. will be made in SILKS.
This purpose is two fold; to teach you corsage flower placement with
ease, and also, that you may have a permanent "model" to keep.

MONDAY P.M. (WORK TABLE)
DESIGN CORSAGES, WRISTLETS AND HEADPIECES WITH FRESH FLOWERS
Feathered or Frenched carnation corsage, Glamellias, Sweet heart rose corsages, orchid corsages. Preparation for "quickie" corsages, etc.

TUESDAY A.M. (CLASS-ROOM & WORK TABLE)
HOW TO HANDLE WEDDING APPOINTMENTS - INTERVIEWING THE BRIDE
Interviewing the bride, selling. designing. coordinating and servicing the wedding and the reception. (Class-room time, 1 hour)
(WORK TABLE) PREPARATION OF FLOWERS FOR BRIDAL BOUQUETS

TUESDAY P.M. (WORK TABLE)
DESIGN BRIDAL BOUQUETS OF VARIOUS STYLES
Bridal bouquets----- Nosegay or Colonial shape, Cascade and Crescent shape Brides Bouquet, Garden baskets and Flower girls baskets.

WEDNESDAY A.M. & P.M., AND THURSDAY A.M. & P.M. (WORK TABLE)
THE CHURCH, THE RECEPTION FLOWERS--AND PARTY FLOWERS
Each student individually designs the following party and wedding decorations.
They spend two full days (16 hours) completing this list. At this point in time, the students are each working on a different design at the same time, the setting being pretty similar to that of working in a large flower shop. THE LIST: The pedestal and urn arrangement. the basket standard. the arch candelabra arrangement, the aisle candelabra arrangement and tie-on, the pew clip-on, buffet table centerpiece. wedding cake-top arrangement, cake table candelabra centerpiece, vase arrangement freeform, topiary arrangement. flower girls basket effect, ring bearers cane. orchid corsage. corsage saddle for the detachable corsage. bridal bouquet in bouquet holder.

FRIDAY A.M. FIELD TRIP & WORK TABLE

TRIP TO THE LOCAL WHOLESALE FLORIST
We spend two hours at the wholesale house, browsing and touring the cooler, becoming familiar with all the supplies available to us. Upon returning to the school. the remainder of the A.M. is devoted to completing any designs not finished on THE LIST. Also, we design bridal bouquets In wet foam bouquet holders. Novelty designs.

REVIEW ANY QUESTIONS OR PROBLEMS THE STUDENTS MAY HAVE.
REVIEW OF P0SS. QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS FOR THE STATE
LICENSING EXAM FOR THE LOUISIANA DESIGNERS LICENSE.

FRIDAY NIGHT (8:00 P.M.) GRADUATION BANQUET
HELD AT A LOCAL RESTAURANT PRIVATE DINING ROOM. SOME OF
THE DESIGNS OF THE STUDENTS MAY BE ON DISPLAY AND FRIENDS AND
RELATIVES MAY BE INVITED FOR A MODERATE DINING COST. THE STUDENTS ARE OUR GUESTS. AT THIS TIME THEIR DIPLOMAS WILL BE PRESENTED.
